Why these prints are different

Every print starts as a real drawing

A great many Paris prints sold online were never drawn by anyone. They were generated, or traced from a photograph, or assembled from stock elements. These were made the slow way: Indian ink, watercolour, a sheet of paper, and an artist sitting in front of the building.

The originals still exist. Each print is a faithful reproduction of a physical drawing, scanned in high definition, and if you would rather own the drawing itself, that is what the Original Art page is for.

If you want to be sure of what you are buying anywhere online, the buyer’s guide lists the six checks that separate a hand-made piece from a generated one.

Before you order

Is this hand-drawn, or generated?

Every image in this collection was drawn by hand by Sébastien Rieu, in Indian ink and watercolour on paper, in Paris and in his Bordeaux studio. The original drawings physically exist and are scanned in high definition to make the prints. There is no AI and no tracing at any stage.

Where is the print made, and how quickly does it arrive?

Prints are made to order in the United Kingdom and posted from there, so a British order is an ordinary domestic delivery of about a week, with no import formalities of any kind.

What sizes are available?

Three sizes: 30 by 40 centimetres at €29, 50 by 70 centimetres at €39, and 61 by 91 centimetres at €49, all on museum-quality matte paper. Prints are supplied unframed, which keeps the price down and lets you match your own frames.

Can I buy the original drawing instead of a print?

Yes, when the original is still available. The drawing on paper, signed by the artist, is sold separately and posted tracked from France; the Original Art page of atelier-caricature.co.uk explains how that works and what it costs.

Can I ask for a Paris scene that is not in the collection?

Yes. A café, a street corner, a hotel or the restaurant where a proposal happened can all be drawn from your photographs and then printed in the same three sizes. Describe it on the contact page and Sébastien replies with a price and a timescale.
